A £38 million signing from Atletico Madrid in July 2011, Sergio Aguero became Manchester City’s record signing at the time, and big things were expected from the little Argentine.
227 appearances, 157 goals and 41 assists later, he is considered to be one of the greatest strikers to grace the Premier League.
Consistently hitting double figures in every season he’s been in England, along with three Premier League titles, five player of the month awards, 10 hat-tricks and making Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler scream like never before at Aguero’s last-minute goal to win City the league, cements the striker in the history books.
The City striker’s latest hat-trick for the club puts him one behind the Premier League record held by all-time top goal scorer Alan Shearer.
There is also this impressive stat-trick following Manchester City’s 3-1 victory against Arsenal on Sunday:
But is he deemed underrated?
Manchester City’s number 10 has never been given the PFA player of the year award, despite winning the golden boot in the 2014/15 season. Players such as Robin van Persie (2011/12), Cristiano Ronaldo (2006/07 and 2007/08) and Luis Suarez (2013/14) have all been winners in the same calibre as Aguero of the award and all whom have picked up the golden boot award respectively.
The Argentine has also only featured in the PFA team of the year once, in the 2017/18 season a season where he didn’t win the golden boot either.
The fellow players around Aguero may not be seeing the impact he has, resulting in him not getting acknowledged as much as players who are hot in-form.
Mark Seal, son of the chairman of the Manchester City supporters club, said Aguero deserves more accolades and praise. He said:
“I do think that he is underrated within the Premier League.
“A striker of his ability should definitely have featured within the Premier League team of the year more times.”
It also isn’t just the fans, with former Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry, taking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, also believing he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
“You have journalists voting for the best player, players voting and if you ask an individual player ‘who has been one of the most consistent or the best striker in the league recently’ – Harry Kane is coming along – but they would all say Aguero.”
Aguero could be the best striker in the Premier League history, but also the best underrated player, but there is no doubt that he will always be in City fan’s hearts, regardless of being seen as underrated by his peers.
