Hovering just three points above the drop-zone, Wigan travel to fellow Championship strugglers Blackburn tomorrow night in a game that could hold huge significance come the end of the season.
The Latics were on course for a vital three points to add to their campaign for Championship survival, however two late goals for Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday snatched the points from under the visitor’s noses.
Blackburn’s promising season has derailed, with no win in six, Rovers will be looking to regain some sort of momentum heading into the final stages of the season after Saturday’s defeat at home to Preston.
Daniel Johnson slotted home after just eight minutes with Rovers looking like they could potentially be dragged into a relegation battle if they don’t pick up and improve on their current form.
The last time the two sides met, at The DW Stadium earlier in the season, the hosts ran out 3-1 winners and Wigan fans will be hoping for the same when the two sides meet again on Tuesday night at Ewood Park.
Blackburn sit 17th in the SkyBet Championship, 11 points off the relegation zone. Wigan currently find themselves in 20th position, three points off the drop with only Millwall separating them from 22nd placed Rotherham United.
Speaking to I-follow Rovers, Blackburn’s official online channel, Derrick Williams spoke ahead of the clash tomorrow night.
“It’s just not going our way at the moment, but we need to trust the process, keep believing and eventually things will turn,” he said.
“We’ve had a bad six weeks but we can still put things right.
“We know we’re good enough to play at this level. Things will change for us. We want to finish five or six places higher, at least.”
Only time will tell whether or not Rovers can avenge their defeat against the Latics last November and solidify their Championship status.
