The Salvation Army gives retired man a “purpose”

A retired man gives back to the community by collecting donations for the Salvation Army.

Michael Atkinson, a Herald at the charity, spends his time selling the ‘War Cry’ magazine in the streets of Preston and Garstang.

After retiring, he decided to join the Salvation Army because his life “lacked a purpose”.

Being a part of the team broke up his spare time.

The 73-year-old said he found a way to reconnect with God at a Church service on his 70th birthday.

Mr Atkinson said: “It gives my life a purpose and a sense of achievement and the people I meet and the stories they share with me, it’s absolutely wonderful.”

He remembers the day he became a soldier in uniform as being one of his biggest milestones.
