Bomb disposal teams were called to an incident at Manchester Airport after a suspicious package was discovered this morning.

There is confusion as to the cause of the incident with concern growing when a naked man was seen running around nearby.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed that the Transport Hub was evacuated and closed for several hours whilst a controlled explosion was carried out.

A man was detained by police at the scene.

A statement from GMP said: “As part of their assessment to ensure the package is safe, a controlled explosion took place.”

The incident led to trains, buses and trams being delayed including services from both Preston and Liverpool Lime Street stations.

Most of the road closures that were in place have now been lifted with traffic gradually returning back to normal.

However, a small disruption remains in the coach station whilst police continue their enquiries.

The incident has occurred at a time when the airport is shrouded in chaos following the collapse of travel giant Thomas Cook.
