North West team of the week: Scott Sinclair, Brad Potts, Eoin Doyle – and who else?

Championship side Preston North End put four past Brentford, Accrington Stanley recorded their second win of the season in League 1 and Bolton Wanderers picked up their first victory of 2020/21 under new boss Ian Evatt in League 2.

Elsewhere, Rochdale, Salford and Tranmere all picked up wins at the weekend while Blackburn and Oldham earnt a point each.

Let’s see who made The Gazette’s North West team of the week.

GK – Thomas Kaminski

Blackburn keeper Kaminski has now kept three clean sheets on the bounce. The Belgian shot-stopper has had an impressive start to life in England and made five saves against Cardiff City.

Defenders – Ibou Touray, Ross Sykes, Carl Piergianni, Andrew Hughes

Who doesn’t love a clean sheet away from home? Salford defender Ibou Touray put in some great defensive work for his side Salford to make sure they got the three points at Stevenage.

Highly-rated Accrington defender Ross Sykes scored his first goal of the season against AFC Wimbledon. The 21-year-old helped his side level the game while his teammate Butcher scored the winner.

Wait, wasn’t he in team of the week last week? Yes, Carl Piergianni has had back-to-back team of the week appearances following his performance on the weekend for Oldham. He bagged the Lactics’ second goal in a six-goal thriller against Colchester.

It was a first-half to forget for Preston North End against promotion favourites Brentford after conceding twice, but the Lilywhites produced a fantastic second-half performance to turn the game on its head. Andrew Hughes provided an assist to help his side win 4-2 away from home.

Midfielders – Scott Sinclair, Matt Butcher, Matthew Lund, Brad Potts

Matt Butcher’s goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to ensure Accrington got the three points away to AFC Wimbledon.

Matthew Lund also helped his side to a 2-1 win, with Rochdale winning at home against Fleetwood. His 13th minute strike was his first goal this term.

Brad Potts was another player on the scoresheet for North End on Sunday, contributing to the comeback by scoring the third goal on the 63rd minute.

Strikers – James Vaughan, Eoin Doyle

Experienced striker James Vaughan scored two goals for his side Tranmere. The 32-year-old is still the youngest ever Premier League goal scorer.
