Marcus Rashford’s continued battle against child poverty has once again been in the limelight this week as the government voted against extending the provision of free school meals into the upcoming half-term holidays.
The Manchester United forward has been an avid campaigner in matters relating to child poverty in the last year and wrote to the Prime Minister in June regarding the matter of school meal vouchers during the summer break.
He was left with many plaudits after successfully turning the governments hand, but on Wednesday, a majority of 322 MPs voted against the plea to offer such meals during the half-term.
Despite a result which has come as a disappointment to many, Rashford released a lengthy statement on his social media vowing to continue the fight.
Businesses up and down the country have reacted in solidarity and took their own stance, including Colne-based Bridal shop ‘Ava Rose Hamilton’.
The selflessness of those involved with the scheme clear to see, as the company ,who specialise in boutique wedding dresses, have added free packed lunches to the order list for this next week.
The Bridal shop announced the plans on their Facebook page this morning and it wasn’t long before Rashford recognised their efforts along with many others.
Good morning. This is a totally unrelated bridal post..but we have all been moved by the announcement of children’s free…
Speaking to The Gazette, Ava Rose Hamilton Manager Niahm Worden said: “We live and work in these local communities and the thought of children going hungry, especially in these difficult times, just breaks our hearts.
“No child should ever go hungry or go through the stress and worry of knowing that they will have no food at the table.”
Worden, 21, heaped praise on Rashford, and found out about his work through this week’s developments.
She added: “We were completely unaware of what he was doing!
“This was just something as a team we discussed to help the community, and to have someone like Marcus Rashford on the same page to us is comforting and the platforms we both have together we can make a change.”
Rashford – who was awarded an MBE earlier this month – will be looking to deliver on the pitch tomorrow as Manchester United look to continue their resurgence in form against Chelsea.
