Tranmere Rovers v Salford City: Crucial League Two clash between promotion hopefuls

Salford City will be looking to continue their promotion charge against play-off hopefuls Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday, writes RYAN RICHARDSON.

Neil Wood’s Salford will be looking to make it four wins in six games to move level on points with Carlisle United in the automatic promotion places.

Tranmere will be aiming to get their play-off push back on track after suffering three straight defeats which has left Micky Mellon’s side four points off seventh placed Stockport County.

Kane Hemmings, who is Tranmere’s top scorer with eight goals, will be hopeful of getting back on the scoresheet after the striker failed to score in Rovers’ 2-0 defeat at Doncaster last time out.

Salford’s strike force duo of Conor McAleny and Matt Smith have combined for 15 goals this season, with both providing different dynamics to the forward line.

Smith has netted in his last two appearances while McAleny has scored seven goals in as many games which has seen him nominated for the Sky Bet League Two PFA Fans Player of the Month.

Salford are on a two match winning run after beating Walsall and Rochdale on home soil, however, they have not won in their last three outings on the road.

In the earlier meeting between Rovers and City, the Merseyside team came out 1-0 winners at the Peninsula stadium after a first half strike from Joshua Hawkes.
